David Dewis who died at the beginning of March, was a sculptor and an AMA member. I did not know David at all until he came to talk to us about his work in May 2023. He spoke to us about his progress from salesman to sculptor in metal, making items for among others, Coventry City Council. David seemed to me to be one of those people who was totally at ease with himself and what he did as an artist. I spoke to a friend who had known him in his younger days.

‘’He was a man of integrity and charm. From early days in the motor industry to sculptor, he was an extraordinary character, an original’’.

I talked to him when he visited Open Studios last summer and later found out that he had been given a cancer diagnosis and had made the decision not to take chemotherapy. Working as a sculptor in metal and other resistant materials is an arduous activity. David was a tough individual who enjoyed what he did for a living. We in the AMA will miss him as I’m sure will everyone who knew him.
